Stags’ Series at Marist Postponed, Will Host Iona This Weekend

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Due to CoVid-19 protocols, the Fairfield University Baseball series at Marist has been postponed and replaced with another conference series. The Stags will now host the Iona Gaels for a four-game series that begins on Friday at noon with a doubleheader and conclude with a Saturday twin bill.

Fairfield is the lone unbeaten MAAC team after sweeping the Canisius Golden Griffs in their first series. The Stags showed power at the plate and on the mound as they crushed nine home runs while striking out 31 Canisius batters.

The Stags, who sit on the top spot in the NCAA RPI rankings, scored 34 times against the Griffs and batted .336 for the series. Justin Guerrera led the way for Fairfield as he launched four homers, scored seven runs, and drove in nine runs while hitting .533. His weekend was highlighted by an historic three homer contest as he became just the third Stag in program history to achieve that feat. For his efforts, Guerrera earned national and conference recognition as he was named a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week and customarily named the MAAC Player of the Week.

On the mound, all four Fairfield starters recorded victories as the quartet combined for 28 strikeouts on just two walks. Trey McLoughlin led the quartet in strikeouts as he reached double figures for the third time in his career with 11 punch outs against the Griffs. Jake Noviello was the lone starter not to allow a run as he hurled one of the best games of his young career with six shutout innings and a career-high seven strikeouts.

In his first home game in nearly two years, John Signore settled into his old self while giving up just a solo homerun and struck out six in 5.1 innings. Michael Sansone went the longest of any Stag starter with seven innings while tallying a quality start with three runs and six hits allowed.

The Gaels enter play with a 3-5 overall record and are coming off a series loss to Canisius. Jake Field leads the team with a .441 batting average and 15 hits through the first eight contests. Zach Grace leads the starting rotation with a 3.00 ERA and 11 strikeouts.

Despite the series being held at Alumni Diamond, the Stags will be the visiting team on the scoreboard and will bat first in all four games.

This is scheduled to be the start of a 16-game home stand for the Stags who will next host Quinnipiac midweek on Wednesday at noon.
