Stags Rally to Edge Niagara, 4-3, in MAAC Opener

Fairfield erases a 3-0 deficit

WILLIAMSVILLE, N.Y. – Facing a 3-0 deficit in their MAAC opener on Saturday at Niagara, Fairfield University Women's Tennis reeled off four straight singles win to claim a 4-3 victory.  Scarlett Hutchinson earned the clinching win at #1 singles – the first win of her collegiate career.

"What a comeback! We dug ourselves a big whole to start going down 3-0 but the team kept scratching and clawing and pulled out the win" said Head Coach Jeff Bricker. "It wasn't our best day on the court, but we showed a lot of grit and it's good to be 1-0 in MAAC play."

Hutchinson was also victorious in #1 doubles alongside Francesca Karman, though the Purple Eagles got the win at the #2 and #3 slots to take the point. Singles wins of Jaida Borg at #4 and Elena Mayet at #2 extended the Niagara cushion to 3-0.

At that point, Anna Komer finished off a straight-set win at #5 to get the Stags on the board, and Sophia Prinos completed her win at #6 shortly thereafter to close the gap to 3-2. The final two singles matches went to a third set, with Karman pulling out the equalizing victory at #3 and Hutchinson following with the clincher at #1.

The Stags return to non-conference action this week with a visit to UConn on Wednesday and a Saturday trip to Stony Brook.
