FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Men's Tennis was in action on the Walsh Athletic Center Outdoor Courts for the first time in 2021 this afternoon, hosting Merrimack in non-conference action. The Warriors avenged the Stags' win in North Andover earlier this month, head back to Massachusetts with a 5-2 victory.
Â
"Merrimack wanted it more than we did today. They came out and played well," Head Coach
Jeff Bricker said. "We didn't match their energy and suffered the consequences. We'll get back to the drawing board and be ready for Niagara on Saturday."
Â
Stathis Tsiranidis went unbeaten on the day, teaming with
Kaya Gore to win at #1 doubles, then earning the decision at #2 singles in a tiebreaker – 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (10-7). The Stags other victory on Sunday came at #6 singles, where
Griffin Schlesinger topped Merrimack's Conrad Koch in three sets – 5-7, 6-0, 7-5.
Â
Fairfield also got a strong showing from
Lewis Edwards in the #4 singles spot. Edwards was edged in a tiebreaker by a count of 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (10-6).
Â
Up next, the Stags trek to Western New York to begin MAAC play at Niagara on Saturday, March 27.
