FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Tennis earned its first win of the season on Wednesday at the Walsh Athletic Center Outdoor Courts with a 5-2 triumph over visiting Providence. Four Stags earned singles wins on the day in addition to sweeping the doubles point.
"It was nice to get our first win of the season today," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker. "We've been competing well, so it's great for that hard work and effort to be rewarded with a victory."
The Stags gained the early edge in doubles competition with
Amanda Nowak and
Aina March picking up the win at #3 by default.
Anna Komer and
Francesca Karman cruised to a 6-1 win at #1 doubles to clinch the point, and the duo of
Sophia Prinos and
Laina Campos locked up the sweep with a 6-3 win at the #2 spot.
A default at #6 singles moved the lead to 2-0 in favor of the Stags, and Komer rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 win at #5 singles to make it a 3-0 advantage. Providence got on the board with a victory at #2 singles, but March would quickly seal the win for the home team, earning a 6-2, 6-0 decision at #3 singles to lock up the deciding point. Karman added an insurance win at #4, and
Katarina Plumtree was edged in a marathon tiebreaker – 5-7, 6-4, 1-0 (10-8) – to round out the final team tally at 5-2.
Following up on their fourth straight win over the Friars, the Stags are back in action on the WAC Outdoor Courts this Sunday, March 21 against Bryant. First serve is slated for noon.
