Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men's Basketball Falls To Quinnipiac

Box Score

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Taj Benning scored a team-high 18 points while Jake Wojcik added 14 points in the Fairfield University men's basketball team's 78-63 setback against Quinnipiac University. Supreme Cook came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds as the Stags out rebounded the Bobcats by a 36-30 count.

"Quinnipiac showed they have many offensive weapons today with multiple players hurting you," Head Coach Jay Young said. "Our offense struggled today and our defense certainly wasn't good enough to bail it out. I thought we let our lack of shot making impact our focus on the defensive end."

The Stags scored the game's first points and still held a two-point edge at 4-2 after Chris Maidoh's layup four minutes into the game. Quinnipiac gained the lead for the first time by netting four straight points that brought the score to 6-4 before Allen Jeanne Rose came off the bench to convert one of two free throws to make it a one-point game.

The two teams traded baskets over the next two minutes which kept the lead at one point, 10-9, with 12:23 on the clock. Quinnipiac would score 14 of the next 19 points to take its first double-digit lead of the game at 24-14 at the 7:23 mark. Jason Rigoni netted two three pointers and Luis Kortright added five more points during the run. Rigoni and Kortright would finish the game with 20 points.

Fairfield trailed by 16 points by halftime despite strong efforts from Benning and Maidoh. Benning paced the Stags with seven points while Maidoh came off the bench to add six points and five rebounds. Benning would improve on his scoring total by adding 11 points over the final 20 minutes of play.

The Stags came out of the locker room with a little flurry and was able to cut into the visitor's lead through the first three minutes of the second half. But the early run was cut short when Quinnipiac used an 11-2 run over the next five minutes to gain its biggest advantage of the game at 56-35 with 12 minutes remaining.

Fairfield was able to trim points off the lead later in the half but was unable to come any closer than 15 points which it managed on several occasions in the period. The Stags managed to outscore its opponent in the second half, 39-38. The 39 points tallied over the final half were the most by Fairfield this season, surpassing a 37-point effort against Siena on January 10.

Kortright capped his night off with 10 assists to record a double-double. Seth Pinkney was the third Quinnipiac student-athlete in double figures with 11 points. Maidoh finished his evening with seven rebounds, shooting three of four from the floor in his 17 minutes of work.

The two teams will play once again on Monday afternoon at Alumni Hall on the Fairfield  University campus. Tipoff is slated for 2 pm.
