FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team performed well offensively by shooting 45 percent, but their defense could not stop the Quinnipiac Bobcats in the second half as the Bobcats shot over 57.5 percent in the half for a 67-55 decision over the Stags.
The Stags (7-3, 6-2 MAAC) led throughout the first half until a Mikala Morris layup with 1:44 left in the first half tied the game at 25-25.
The Bobcats started the third quarter on a 5-0 run and the Stags could not come back the rest of the way. The Stags, however, did stay within striking distance until the end.
Andrea Hernangomez, who connected on her first four shots on the afternoon, swished through a 3-pointer to put the Stags deficit at just two at 34-32.
Katie Armstrong followed suit on the next offensive play with another 3-pointer to keep the Stags within two.
While the Stags were executing on the offensive end, they could not get a stop on the defensive side as the two teams exchanged baskets during that four minute stretch, end on Armstrong's 3-pointer. The Bobcats ended the quarter on a 7-2 run, grabbing a seven point advantage going into the final quarter.
The Stags would get within six points three different times in the fourth quarter, but the Bobcats would end up out-scoring the Stags 23-18 in the period.
This would complete the Quinnipiac comeback as the Stags led by as many as eight points four times in the first half.
Lou Lopez-Senechal led three different Stags in double figures with 20 points, the second straight game she reached that number. Armstrong added 12 pooints and seven blocks, with six of those coming in the second half. The seven blocks are tied for the ninth most in a single game in Stags history and the most since Stephanie Geehan in 2010. Hernangomez poured in 11 and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds.
Rachel Hakes added to her assist total with 10 helpers in the contest, the third time this season she has reached double digit assists. She entered play second in the country with 7.4 helpers per game.
The Stags will look for the split in the series tomorrow in Hamden at 4pm.
