Men's Basketball Takes Overtime Decision Against Stony Brook

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's basketball team erased a double-digit second-half deficit and rallied for an 83-78 overtime win over Stony Brook University at Webster Bank Arena this afternoon. The Stags trailed by 11 points with 14 minutes remaining in regulation before making their comeback.

Fairfield opened the second half with Supreme Cook's second-chance layup to pull within four points at 40-36. The lead remained at four points after Jake Wojcik's three-point play made the score 45-41 with 17:48 on the clock. Stony Brook opened up that lead with a 9-2 run that pushed the edge to 11 points at 54-43 just three minutes later as Anthony Roberts scored four of those points and added an assist to the run.

The visitors kept that double-digit lead for another five minutes, keeping the  difference at 11 points after a three-point play from Roberts with 12 minutes remaining. The Stags found their three-point range at that point with Wojcik netting a pair and TJ Long as well as Taj Benning connecting from behind the arc to bring the team within a point at 61-60 just three minutes later.

Stony Brook was able to push the lead back to five points at 65-60 before Fairfield responded with its own 9-2 run to take the lead at 69-60 following Chris Maidoh's putback dunk at the 2:18 mark. The Seawolves wrapped a pair of baskets around a Wojcik driving layup to end regulation with a 71-71 score.

Jahlil Jenkins opened the extra period with a jumper from 12 feet to push Stony Brook into the lead for the final time as Benning offered four straight free throws to erase the deficit and put his team in front for good at 75-73 with 3:57 on the clock.

A pair of free throws from Roberts with a minute remaining brought Stony Brook as close as it would come at 76-75 but Long's three pointer made it a two-possession lead for the Stags. Allen Jeanne-Rose would cap the overtime run with a second-chance layup with 16 seconds remaining, giving a six-point lead to the Stags.

"I thought this was a really good college basketball game," Fairfield Head Coach Jay Young said. "Credit Stony Brook for how hard they competed today. They are extremely difficult to guard so we were really fortunate to come away with the win."

Wojcik finished the game with a team-high 24 points while Cook registered 16 points and nine rebounds with a block to pace the Stags. Benning added 14 points while Long came off the bench to contribute 11 points to represent Fairfield's four double-digit scorers. Roberts paced all Stony Brook with a game-high 30 points, netting 16 of the Seawolves' 40 first-half points.

The Stags shot 50 percent from the floor in the game, connecting on 30 of 60 shots attempted. The team also excelled at the free throw line, netting 16 of 18 charity tosses for 89 percent. Eight different Stags scored in the game including four of the team's five reserves.

Fairfield finishes up its two-game home stand by hosting Loyola University Maryland on Sunday at Webster Bank Arena. The game is scheduled for a 2 pm tip.
