LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team scored a goal in each half to gain a 2-2 draw with Siena College on the road.
Siena broke through with the game's first goal when Bilal Hersi scored in the 22
nd minute, converting a scoring chance set up by Erik Reis and Jesper Schone Vogtengen. The Stags did not waste much time getting even in the match as
Rasmus Sorensen Rejnhold secured his second goal of the season when he accepted a pass from
Cormac Pike just 90 seconds later.
There were nine shots in the first half but only three were on target with Fairfield goalkeeper
William Marment being credited with the only save of the opening 45 minutes. The two teams opened up play in the second half with Siena picking up eight shots against Fairfield's four attempts. But the putting aside the number, both teams were able to find the back of net one more time in the second half.
Fairfield took its first lead of the game when
Jonathan Filipe secured a pass from
Thomas Drillien and deposited into the far corner in the 70
th minute, pushing the score to 2-1. The Saints turned things back to even when Cole Hellert took advantage of a scoring chance set up by a pair of passes from Antonio Linge and Birgir Thorsteinsson in the 75
th minute.
The Stags went to overtime for the second straight game, also requiring extra time in last Wednesday's match with Monmouth University. The Saints garnered more chances in the overtime, taking a pair of shots in both 10-minute periods as compared to just one attempt by the Stags. Neither team could break the deadlock and finished the game with a draw, the second of the season for the Stags.
Marment finished the night with three saves while Siena goalkeeper Greg Monroe pulled down one save in his 110 minutes of work.
The Stags will return home for a pair of games next week as the team finishes the regular season with four dates at Lessing Field over their final six outings. Fairfield will host Manhattan College on Wednesday night and Iona College on Saturday night. Both games are slated for 7 pm.
