Turner Earns Shutout In First Cap With US National Soccer Team

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Former Fairfield University goalkeeper Matt Turner made the most of his first start with the United States Men's National Soccer Team, earning a shutout in the 7-0 win over Trinidad and Tobago on Sunday night. The appearance was his first international cap with US Soccer and comes off his highly-successful season with Major League Soccer's (MLS) New England Revolution.

Turner's big moment came in the 65th minute when Trinidad and Tobago was awarded a penalty kick. Alvin Jones stepped to the spot and sent a shot to the lower left corner but Turner was able to dive and turn away the shot before jumping on the rebound to prevent any further attack. The play would be Turner's only save of the night as the United States outshot its opponent by a 19-2 margin. The United States put 12 shots on goal and converted seven for goals.

At Fairfield, Turner played in all 18 games as a senior during the 2015 season and recorded a .793 save percentage with a 0.98 goals against average. He led the nation in save percentage (89 percent) and helped the Stags lead the nation in shutout percentage by not allowing a goal in 72 percent of the games in which he played. He was an All-Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) second team selection in 2015 and was a MAAC All-Tournament team pick in 2014.
