WEST POINT, N.Y. — It took Fairfield University Men's Tennis too long to wake up for its 10 a.m. start against Army this morning. But once the Stags did, they gave the Black Knights of the Hudson all they could handle. Unfortunately, the Stags could not overcome the slow start and fell by a score of 4-1.
Â
In doubles, Fairfield started particularly sluggish and lost the all-important point. Stags' freshmen
Jonathan Olive-Blanco and
Griffin Schlesinger went unfinished at 5-4.
Â
"We just didn't play Fairfield doubles today. We didn't attack like usual and it cost us. The doubles will be ready for Yale," said Head Coach
Jeff Bricker
Â
As for singles, tardiness was again the order of the morning: Fairfield lost all six opening sets. Finally, though, with the score at 3-0, the Stags made it a match. All the remaining four singles matches were going three. First, junior
Allan Magid came all the way back, recording a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 win. Then freshman
Stefan Mitrovic nearly bested his West Point foe, but fell 6-4 in the decider. The matches for
Lewis Edwards and
Jonathan Olive-Blanco went unfinished.
Â
"Army is a great team and I'm really happy with the fight we showed after being down. We played with a lot of heart," Bricker said.

Fairfield next takes on Yale at the Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center in New Haven on March 7 at 4 p.m.
