Box Score BUFFALO, N.Y. – Lou Lopez-Senechal and
Katie Armstrong were once again the scoring punch for the Stags combining for 44 points, but it was not enough as the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team fell 70-63 to the Canisius Golden Griffs to split their stay in Western New York.
The Stags (11-9, 8-3 MAAC) would relinquish a double-digit lead by giving up a 9-0 run in the second quarter, and the Stags would not regain the lead.
Fairfield tried for a late comeback led by Armstrong, who had 11 of her 22 points in the final quarter including all three of her 3-pointers. Her final one put the Stags down just five at 68-63 with 31 seconds left.
That gave the Stags one final gasp as
Rachel Hakes had two good defensive plays, forcing back-to-back turnovers to give the Stags some life.
However, the Stags would miss on both of their ensuing opportunities, allowing Canisius to get back on the line and the clock running out.
The Stags grabbed the early lead, using a 14-0 run in the first quarter to turn a 7-3 deficit into a double-digit lead at 17-7.
Callie Cavanaugh was the leader during that run as she netted six of the 14 points during the stretch including the jumper at the 5:53 mark to tie the score at 7-7.
Sam Kramer, who reached 250 career assists in the win at Niagara, was the passing leader for the Stags as she tallied five assists in the first quarter as the Stags grabbed a 17-9 lead after the first period.
The momentum quickly changed after the first quarter intermission as the Griffs started the second quarter on a 15-2 run to completely erase Fairfield's double-digit lead. The Griffs' leading scorer D'Jhai Patterson-Ricks tied the score at 19 after a steal at midcourt and converting the fast break layup.
Lou Lopez-Senechal stopped the bleeding with four-straight points, but Canisius was able to keep a 29-25 lead into the locker room.
Fairfield would make a run in the third quarter and get within a single possession after six-straight points by Lopez-Senechal made the score 35-33. Canisius, however, would respond with seven-straight points of their own and would lead by as many as 11 after an AJ Timbers 3-pointer forced a Fairfield timeout.
Lopez-Senechal reached 20 points for the second-straight game in the third quarter as she netted nine of the team's first 11 points in the quarter.
The Stags cut the deficit to eight by the end of the third quarter but a Danielle Sanderlin jumper early in the fourth put the Canisius lead back to double digits.
Fairfield tried for a rally in the fourth quarter but missed seven-straight shots at a crucial point allowing Canisius to keep their double digit advantage.
Armstrong finally ended the run with a short jumper near the six minute mark ending a three minute drought for the Stags.
In total, the Stags shot just 6-for-21 from 3-point range, a game after setting the program's single game record with a 69 percent shooting percentage from deep.
Lopez-Senechal and Armstrong led the Stags with their second-straight games with 20+ points, both tying with a game-high 22. For Lopez-Senechal, it was also the 11th-straight game in double figures for the sophomore. She finished with her second career double-double as she also pulled down a career-high 11 rebounds.
Kramer tied a career-high with eight assists.
The Stags will close out their three-game road trip when they visit Monmouth on Thursday at 7pm.
