FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will welcome three-time reigning MAAC Champions Quinnipiac in a 'Red Out' at Alumni Hall on Saturday at 2pm. The Stags and the Bobcats will enter the afternoon game basically tied in the conference standings with just .5 games separating the two.
The Stags are coming off their second-straight loss as they dropped an overtime heartbreaker at Saint Peter's. The Peacock's Taiah Thornton swished through the game-winning 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left in overtime to lift Saint Peter's over Fairfield. The Stags had tied the game five seconds prior when
Katie Armstrong hit a jumper forcing a Saint Peter's timeout.
The Stags ended regulation with a 6-0 run ending with a Armstrong free throw, but neither side could record a point over the final 2:13 of game action. Fairfield had the final shot of the regular time but Armstrong's jumper went off the rim.
Armstrong led three Stags id double figures as she chipped in 16.
Sam Kramer was right behind her with 15 points while dishing out a career-high nine assists.
Andrea Hernangomez also posted a personal best grabbing 14 rebounds.
As a team, the Stags grabbed 55 rebounds in the game, the most Fairfield has tallied since Nov. 18, 2009 in a victory over Lafayette. Fairfield hauled in 25 offensive rebounds but only cashed in 12 second chance points.
Kramer led the Stags from behind the arc with three 3-pointers made, bringing her career total to 141. She is now alone in ninth place all-time just two behind Sabra Wrice '08.
Quinnipiac is coming off a 68-62 setback to Rider on Thursday, their third loss in their last four outings to bring their MAAC record to 9-6.
The Bobcats failed to hit a 3-pointer in their loss to Rider going 0-for-10 from behind the arc. Paige Warfel led three Bobcats in double figures with 15 points, seven of those coming from the free throw line.
Shaq Edwards is the lone Quinnipiac player to average double digit scoring with 13.1. Taylor Herd (9.7) and Mikala Morris (9.4) rank right behind her. Edwards and Herd are the two biggest threats from long range, combining for 68 of the team's 140 triples.
Fairfield begins a grueling stretch with four games in just a week and will continue their journey, traveling to league-leading Marist on Monday at 7pm.
