Men's Basketball Finishes Homestand Wednesday Against Saint Peter's

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The season's first prolonged home stand comes to an end on Wednesday night when the Fairfield University men's basketball welcomes Saint Peter's University to George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall. The game will tip off at 7 pm. The Stags split their first two games during this stretch of home games, falling to Marist College at Webster Bank Arena before beating Manhattan College at Alumni Hall last Friday.

Fairfield earned its first home win of the season with an impressive 68-60 decision over Manhattan at Alumni Hall. The Stags never trailed in the game, opening up a 16-2 lead in the first four minutes of action. Senior Landon Taliaferro netted three three-point field goals during the opening run, helping the guard post 24 points in the game. With his performance against Manhattan, Taliaferro remains tied for the conference lead with 2.9 three pointers made per game, a slot he shares with Quinnipiac's Rich Kelly. Both student-athletes have 41 three-point field goals in 14 contests.

With his three-point shooting prowess, Taliaferro remains the team's top scorer this season, netting 14.6 points per contests. Jesus Cruz, who has come off the bench for two of his last three appearances, holds second place among his teammates with his 12.5 scoring average. Tonight's game completes Fairfield's three-game home stand, setting up a pair of road games on the team's docket. The Stags will travel to Iona College on Friday night before playing at Quinnipiac on January 24.

Fairfield moved back into the top spot for scoring defense among all MAAC teams, holding first place by allowing 63.7 points per game. The average also places the Stags 62nd in the NCAA Division I statistics. Taliaferro is currently ranked 40th in the nation for three-point field goals per game (2.93 per game), and 48th in three-point field goal percentage (.398).

The Peacocks are looking to halt a two-game skid after opening Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play with a pair of victories. The team dropped a 72-68 decision to Canisius in the team's last outing. Saint Peter's places second among the 11 MAAC teams with its .365 field goal percentage from behind the arc. Doug Edert leads the charge from long distance, making 52 percent of this three-point tries (30 of 58) which also puts him at the top of the conference three-point field goal percentage leaders. He also stands fifth among the conference leaders with 2.3 three pointers made per game.

KC Ndefo has been one of the conference's top defensive players. The forward ranks first in the MAAC with 2.5 blocked shots per game, registering 27 rejections in 11 games. He is also the team's top rebounder with 5.2 per game, slightly better than Derrick Woods' rebounding average of 4.9 caroms every forty minutes.Daryl Banks III paces the team in scoring with 9.6 points per game, an accomplishment since he has come off the bench for eight of his 12 appearances this year. Edert is next in line with his 9.5 scoring average.

Following this game, the Stags will be on the road for a pair of MAAC games but both contests will be local. Fairfield heads to Iona College on Friday for a 7 pm game before receiving a week off until traveling to Quinnipiac University on Friday, January 24 for a 7 pm game. The Stags return home on Sunday, January 26 for an afternoon match up with Canisius College at Alumni Hall.
