Men's Soccer Falls At Hartford

HARTFORD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team came up short in a road game against the University of Hartford, a 2-0 decision on Saturday afternoon.

The Stags used some creativity in the first half to open up several chances in the offensive third. Fairfield ended up outshooting its host by a 14-5 count with four of those opportunities being on target. Santiago Gonzalez was responsible for two of those shots that reached their target, but Hawks' goalkeeper Jimmy Shelton was able to turn away both attempts as well as two other shots on goal.

Hartford broke through a solid defensive effort by the Stags as Jordan Koduah posted the first goal of the game in the 23rd minute. The scoring play started with a nice run down the far touchline by Tomer Drimmer. Drimmer took control of the ball near the corner and sent a cross into the box toward the far post. Koduah found the ball through some traffic and headed the ball back toward the near post that beat the Stags defense for a 1-0 lead.

second goal came in the second half when Hartford continued to press forward and apply pressure over the final 45 minutes. A cross from the near side evaded several players before a Fairfield defender tried to clear the loose ball but instead deflected the ball into the Stags' goal to push the score to 2-0.
Hartford wound up with a slight edge in shots during the second half as both teams combined for five total shots. Fernando Robayo put his second-half shot on goal while Luan Lamas tried a shot in the final 10 minutes but the attempt sailed wide of the post.

The Hawks nearly picked up a third goal late in the half but Nadav Zarmi was able to clear the ball off Fairfield's line before it crossed which kept the Stags within reach with 20 minutes remaining in the half.
Fairfield goalkeeper Gordon Botterill did not make a save in the game while Slayton made five saves to record the shutout.

The Stags will finish up non-conference play next week when they travel to Army West Point for a match on September 24. Game time is scheduled for 7 pm.
