WEST POINT, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University men's soccer team capped its non-conference season with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Army West Point, the team's second 1-0 road win of the season.
The game was evenly matched with both teams having opportunities throughout the game. The Stags held the advantage for most of the first half but the Black Knights made more progress in the second half, especially when they were forced to push forward and take more chances up front. Fairfield held a slight advantage in shots during the first 45 minutes, registering a 6-4 edge during the half. But it was
an attempt by Cooper
Knecht that was the difference in tonight's game as the sophomore converted a pass from
Colman Kim, placing the ball past the goalkeeper to the lower side of the goal.
"It was great to see Cooper get off the mark tonight," Head Coach
Carl Rees said after the game. "It was even better that he was able to provide the game winner and contribute to a great team effort."
Knecht's scoring play came in the
19th minute to provide an early edge, placing the responsibility of upholding that lead squarely on the shoulders of Fairfield's defenders. And as has become expected, the Stags defenders and goalkeeper kept the opposition frustrated and in check for the rest of the game. The second half saw Army West Point increase its pace and present more scoring chances.
In the final 20 minutes, the home team received several free kicks within 25 yards of goal but goalkeeper Gordon
Botterill was equal to the task, making several saves under pressure. The junior made six saves in the second half, most of which were down the stretch as Army West Point tried to work its way toward a draw. But in the end, Fairfield was able to keep its opposition off the board.
"We were improved defensively and more flexible tactically defensively," Coach Rees said. "We were quicker on the ball in attack as well.
Colman Kim played another tremendous game while Danny
Raimondo also was very good."
Fairfield will have a brief layoff before returning to action in October for Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (
MAAC) play. After playing three consecutive road games, the Stags will start the conference slate by hosting Rider University on October 2 beginning at 7 pm. The home stand concludes on October 5 with a 3 pm match against Saint Peter's University. Both matches will be played at Lessing Field.
