FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- With a three-game winning streak tucked away, the Fairfield University field hockey team will have to deal with two difficult opponents this weekend with the added hurdle of playing the games more than 1,000 miles away from campus. The Stags will play Kent State University on Friday afternoon before battling Indiana University on Sunday afternoon. Both games will be played on the campus of St. Louis University.
Fairfield picked up a pair of wins last weekend at home, the team's first games at University Field this season. Head Coach
Jackie Kane saw her team come-from-behind for the second time this season against the University of Vermont, scoring two second-half goals to erase a one-goal deficit and win the game by a 2-1 score. Two days later, Fairfield left little doubt against St. Francis Pa. as the team scored in every quarter on its way to a 5-0 victory. The Stags defense was stellar in the weekend effort, as the goalkeepers did not have to make a save the entire weekend.
Zoe Rosen and
Colette Morgan combined for the team's first shutout of the season, facing four shots from the Red Flash.
This weekend, the Stags will face a pair of teams that have enjoyed early success beginning with their first opponent Kent State. The Golden Flashes collected a pair of wins over Temple (3-0) and the University of Maine (2-1) last weekend, pushing their overall record to 3-2. The program started the year with a win in its first three dates, including a hard-fought loss to Michigan State by a 1-0 count.
Laila Richter and Clara Rodriguez
Seto are at the top of the team's statistics sheet with nine points each. Rodriguez
Seto boasts a team-best four goals in her scoring total while Richter leads the team with five assists to account for more than half of her points. Azure
Fernsler has started all five games in the Kent State goal, registering a .784 save percentage off 29 stops and a 1.60 goals against average.
Indiana brings a 2-2 overall record into the weekend, coming off a 2-1 win over Ball State last Sunday. Both of the Hoosiers' wins have been decided by a goal including a 4-3 decision over Drexel University at home. The team has played its last three games in Bloomington after opening the season at the University of Louisville. Kelsey Giese and Mary Kate
Kesler are the team's top scorers with four points as Giese has a goal and two assists while
Kesler has two goals to her credit. All of
Kesler's points came in the team's first win, scoring the first goal and the tying goal of the 4-3 victory.
Sachi Ananias has played every minute in the Indiana goal, garnering a .622 save percentage and a 3.95 goals against average.
On Fairfield's ledger, junior Danielle
Profita represents the team's top scorer with two goals and three assists for seven points, while
Julianna Kratz places second among her teammates with six points (two goals, two assists). Both student-athletes were recognized by the Northeast Conference for last weekend's efforts with
Profita being named the offensive player of the week and
Kratz being designated for the second time as the NEC rookie of the week.
Zoe Rosen has started all four games in the Stags' goal, posting a 1.54 goals against average with a .778 save percentage (21 saves).
The Stags return home next weekend when they host Columbia University on September 20 at 4 pm and Providence College on September 22 at noon, the start of a four-game home stand for the team.
