FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Sixteen members of the Fairfield University Baseball team will have the chance to gain even more experience after their 60-game spring schedule as the group will take parts in various summer leagues across the region. The collegiate leagues where the Stags will be represented include the: New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL), Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League (PGCBL), Hudson Valley Collegiate League, Futures League, Hamptons League, Hudson River Collegiate Baseball League, and Coastal Plain League
"The summer is a very important time for our kids to get out and play baseball," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "They get more at-bats and more innings as a pitcher. Many of them will come back with a lot more experience and the ability to play with different people and different coaches. They all take something out of every situation which helps them to be better when they come back in the fall."
New England Collegiate Baseball League
The NECBL will feature the most Stags out of any league in 2019 as six different student-athletes will suit up in the league. The battery of catcher
Mike Caruso and pitcher
Trey McLoughlin highlight the group as the duo will team up for the Mystic Schooners.
After his breakout season that saw 21 doubles and a MAAC All-Tournament Team selection, outfielder
Dan Ryan will also take part in the NECBL with the Valley Blue Sox.
Three pitchers close out the group with rising senior
Eli Oliphant who looks to build on his breakout season with the Danbury Westeners. Rising sophomores
Michael Sansone (Newport Gulls) and
Jake Noviello (Sanford Mainers) will also represent the Stags.
Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League
The PGCBL will feature five Stags who have been placed in the league on five different squads.
After recording 67 hits in his rookie season, the most ever by a Stag freshman,
Justin Guerrera highlights the quintet as he will play his summer ball for the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs. The squad will feature the two best offensive rookies in the MAAC during 2019 as Manhattan's Nick Cimillo, the MAAC Rookie of the Year will play alongside Guerrera this season.
Mike Handal has already found success over the summer for his team the Albany Dutchmen, as he was named the Player of the Night after driving in three runs and reaching base four times in the win over the Adirondack Trail Blazers.
A trio of pitchers comprise the rest of the group as right-hander
Nick Grabek joins Handal as a member of the Dutchmen. Left-handers
Jason Hebner (Adirondack Trail Blazers) and
Walker Sutman (Oneonta Outlaws) also will play in the PCGBL.
Futures League
For the second-straight season, outfielder
Dylan Reynolds will be representing the Bristol Blues in the Futures League. Through eight games, Reynolds ranks second on the team with eight hits and is tied for the team lead with six RBI.
Hamptons League
Left-hander
Tristan Amone will be pitching for the Long Island Road Warriors for the second-straight season. In 2018, Amone tied for the team lead in victories and posted a 2.81 ERA.
Coastal Plain League
Rising senior pitcher
Josh Arnold will be suiting up for the Wilson Tobs in the wooden bat Coastal Plain League. In the team's first six games, Arnold has thrown one scoreless inning.
Hudson Valley Collegiate League
Catcher
Nick Weyant is the lone Stag to represent the Hudson Valley Collegiate League and has started on a tear for the Rockland Pirates. Through three games, Weyant is second in the league with a .667 average (6-for-9) and leads the league with seven runs scored and five RBI. With a homer, he is slugging 2.000 with three-straight multi-hit games.
Hudson River Collegiate League
Matt Ferriero is Fairfield's lone representative in the Hudson River Collegiate Baseball League and will join the Storm, who begin their season on June 11.
The Stags finished up the 2019 season with a program-record 35 victories and advanced to the MAAC Championship Series for the second time in the last four years.
