FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Following one of the most dominant pitching performances in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament history, Fairfield University Baseball right-hander
Trey McLoughlin was named a National Player of the Week by the Collegiate Baseball newspaper. The sophomore kept the Stags alive with a complete game three-hit shutout while tallying a career-high 14 strikeouts.
"He was dominating," Head Coach
Bill Currier said. "He located his fastball with a power slider against the top seed in the tournament. He showed great focus and competitive character on the mount from innings one through nine."
McLoughlin's powerful masterpiece came as the Stags were facing an elimination game against top-seeded Canisius in the MAAC Tournament. The right-hander would retire the first 17 batters of the game and set a Fairfield MAAC Championship record with 14 strikeouts. He record at least one punchout in eight of his nine frames, and completed his shutout by striking out the side in the ninth.
McLoughlin's performance helped the Stags advance to the MAAC Championship series for the second time in the last four seasons. The Stags were edged 6-5 in a 13-inning classic against Quinnipiac and ended the 2019 season with a program-record 35 victories.
