STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The result of this game shouldn't overshadow all the dramatic moments of the most exciting MAAC Championship game ever. For 13 innings, all 27 members of the Fairfield University Baseball team left everything they could on the field, but the Stags could not find the big run as they fell 6-5 in the longest MAAC Championship game in history. The Stags forced the Bobcats to strand 17 runners on the day but Quinnipiac would finally come through on a walk-off wild pitch for their first-ever MAAC Championship.
In order for the Bobcats to strand all those runners, the Fairfield bullpen needed to step up, and they did time after time.
Michael Sansone started the impressive outings from the eight different Fairfield pitchers used as he tossed 4.1 innings surrendering just two earned runs in his second outing in three days.
Sansone left in a tie game which lasted from the sixth inning.
Fairfield took a 4-3 lead with three runs in the fifth.
Jack Gethings brought home a run with a fielder's choice and
Anthony Boselli extended his single season record with his 55th of the year with a single. The Stags grabbed the lead on a run scoring error.
After Quinnipiac's Ian Ostberg retook the lead with a two run homer, the Stags would tie the game on a
Justin Guerrera sacrifice fly.
The Stags would only have one more runner in scoring position for the next seven innings, with a Gethings single and stolen base in the 11th. Fairfield could not solve Quinnipiac's left-hander Colin Donnelly who tossed the final 7.2 frames while surrendering just four hits for his sixth victory of the season.
As been the theme all season long, Fairfield's pitching depth kept them breathing.
Eli Oliphant, who was one of three Stags to be named to the MAAC All-Tournament Team threw four innings in relief and gave up just two hits.
Oliphant entered in the seventh and gave the Stags plenty of chances to grab the lead, including inducing a pop out from slugger Evan Vulgamore to strand the bases loaded in the ninth.
The Bobcats would strand the bases loaded in the 11th and the 12th.
Brendan Harkin got a pop up to first in the 11th and
Nick Grabek got a Andre Marrero fly out in the 12th to strand the bases loaded. That 12th frame was almost the final one for the Stags as Dylan Lutz grounded a ball through the left side with a runner at second. The runner from second tried for the winning run, but left fielder
Tim Zeng threw a laser to catcher
Mike Caruso who held on for the first out of the inning.
The magic ran out for the Stags in the 13th as the Bobcats loaded the bases for the fourth time in the game, but this time with nobody out.
Peter Horn was able to get the first out at home on a ground ball to second baseman
Justin Guerrera, but the winning run would cross the plate on a wild pitch to end the 2019 Fairfield baseball season.
Anthony Boselli led the team with three hits in his final game as a Stag and extended his single season RBI record to 55.
Jack Gethings extended his single season hit total to 88 with one base hit today.
Dylan Reynolds,
Giacomo Brancato, and
Mike Caruso also tallied multiple hits.
The Stags end the 2019 season with a program record 35 wins and made their second appearance in the MAAC Championship series in the last four years. The nine-member senior class was also a part of 120 wins, the most in any four-year stretch in program history.
