Stags Clinch Third-Straight MAAC Series Victory

LOUDONVILLE, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team clinched their third-straight Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) series of the season as they defeated the Siena Saints 4-2 in the rubber game on Sunday. The Stags broke through with a single run in both the seventh and eighth innings to break a 2-2 tie.

"It was nice to see Trey McLoughlin adjust after the third inning and go deep into the ball game," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "Justin Guerrera had a good day for us with some big hits and Tom Ryan also delivered with runners on base."

McLoughlin's ability to adjust was the story of the ball game as the sophomore picked up his third win of the season as he pitched into the seventh inning. McLoughlin struggled with his control early on, walking four in the first three innings, including three-straight in the third frame. Siena would open the scoring with a sacrifice fly in the third, plating their first run without a hit.

McLoughlin would settle in by surrendering just two singles during the rest of his outing while striking out six.

The Stags tied the game in the top of the fourth as a RBI single from Tom Ryan brought home Dylan Reynolds. Fairfield would notch the go-ahead run in the fifth on a Guerrera RBI double. That two-bagger was the second of a team-high three hits for the freshman in the contest.

After Siena tied the game in the fifth, Guerrera came up big again. The rookie lined a RBI single through the left side in the seventh, scoring Tim Zeng to give the Stags a 3-2 lead. With his pair of runs today, Zeng increased his team lead to 29 runs scored in the season.

The Stags would score their final run in the eighth as Dan Ryan and Reynolds led off the frame with singles. After Mike Caruso put both runners in scoring position with a sacrifice bunt, Tom Ryan put the ball in play bringing across a run with a sacrifice fly.

The Fairfield bullpen kept the lead as Ian Halpin pitched a hitless eighth to bring way to the Stags closer Nick Grabek who recorded his sixth save of the season with a scoreless ninth.

Grabek's six saves ties him for third on the single season saves list with Justin Severino '09.

Guerrera's three hit performance capped a week where the rookie hit .348 with six RBI.

The Stags will play in one midweek contest on the upcoming ledger when they travel to Hofstra on Wednesday at 3pm.
