Seven Run Seventh Leads Stags Over Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Baseball team used a seven run seventh inning to break open the game and win their 21st win in their last 24 outings with a 9-1 victory over America East leading Stony Brook. Justin Guerrera slugged his third homer of the season and the Fairfield pitching staff held the Seawolves in check until they scratched across a run in the ninth, breaking a 19 inning scoreless streak for Fairfield opponents.

The Stags (25-15) led by two heading into that decisive seventh frame as they plated a run in the first and fifth innings. Anthony Boselli increased his Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) leading RBI total by tallying number 38, with a run scoring single in the first as Guerrera came into score after hitting a double earlier in the frame.

Jack Gethings picked up his conference leading 67th hit of the season, which brought home another run in the fifth.

The first three Stags reached base in the seventh as Tom Ryan led off with the first of his two doubles of the game and would score on a Tim Zeng RBI single. Guerrera cleared the bases with a two run shot on the very next pitch to give the Stags a 5-0 lead. Dan Ryan would add a run scoring single and Giacomo Brancato dealt the final blow with a two-run triple.

On the mound, Jake Noviello hurled the first 3.1 scoreless frames as he exited after giving up two hits and one walk. Once again, the Fairfield bullpen was spectacular, lowering the reliever's ERA to 3.22 of the season. Brendan Harkin threw two hitless innings and was followed by 1.2 scoreless frames from Tristan Amone and a perfect inning from Peter Horn.

The Stags tallied 14 hits compared to just five for Stony Brook, with Tom Ryan leading all players with three base hits. Zeng, Guerrera, Boselli, and Brancato also tallied multiple hit games.

Fairfield will test their brilliant momentum when they fight for first place in the conference standings when they host Canisius for a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
