Stags Shutout Sacred Heart, Again

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – For the second time this season, the Fairfield University Baseball team shutout their crosstown rivals Sacred Heart Pioneers 6-0, the Stags' 19th win in their last 22 outings. It also marked Fairfield's second shutout of the season as Fairfield holds a 2.09 ERA over their last five games.

Josh Arnold got the win for the Stags (24-15), as he scattered three hits over a season-high six innings on the mound. The junior was much better with his control and efficiency in this outing as he did not surrender a walk while striking out five. Arnold needed just 69 pitches total, averaging 11.5 pitches per inning.

Arnold helped keep the game scoreless over the first innings as the Stags did not strike offensively until the fifth. Fairfield would load the bases on walks to Tom Ryan and Griffin Watson while Nick Weyant reached on a bunt single. Tim Zeng would get the first big hit for the Stags with a RBI single and Justin Guerrera welcomed the new Sacred Heart hurler with a two-run single.

Armed with the lead, Arnold would retire the final seven batters he faced, while striking out the first two hitters in his final frame.

The Stags would add two runs in the eighth with the one-out rally starting on Weyant's first career triple. Zeng would add his second RBI hit of the evening while Jack Gethings capped the inning with another RBI base hit.

Ian Halpin, Eli Oliphant, and Nick Grabek each pitched one inning in relief of Arnold, with all tossing scoreless frames.

In the winning effort, the Stags lowered their league leading ERA to 3.68 with a .244 batting average against.

Weyant led the Stags with a career-high three hits while also scoring a pair of runs.

The Stags will have one final tune-up before their conference series as they travel to Long Island to take on the Stony Brook Seawolves on Wednesday at 3pm.
