McLoughlin Shuts Down Monmouth

PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – Fairfield University Baseball sophomore pitcher Trey McLoughlin toed the mound with the mentality that no one could beat him, and tonight no one did. The right hander was in complete control in a dominant complete game two-hitter as he led the Stags to a 7-1 victory over the Monmouth Hawks, shutting down the Hawks in just over two hours.

"I was just trying to work ahead of hitters and I've been struggling with my command a little bit so just focusing on pounding the zone," McLoughlin said. "I was letting my fielders work behind me. It really helped. My curveball was good today because they were swinging over the top of it."

McLoughlin allowed just two hits, and just one past the infield under the lights at Peter Finnerty Field at Pace University, due to the rain at Alumni Diamond.

The first of McLoughlin's hits came in the first inning on a groundball to the short stop position that was cutoff and the throw was wide of the bag, but the runner was credited with a hit.

That would be the only hit the sophomore would allow until the seventh inning, facing the minimum during that stretch. McLoughlin walked just one and struck out nine, with six of those coming in the first three innings.

While McLoughlin would not need that much run support, the Stags (23-15, 11-4 MAAC) would score seven times for the sophomore, with six coming in the first four innings.

Anthony Boselli started the second inning with a single and would be followed with a Jack Gethings double. Dylan Reynolds opened the scoring with a RBI groundout and Tom Ryan would plate another run with a sacrifice fly.

The biggest inning for the Stags came in the fourth as the squad struck for four runs. Justin Guerrera had the biggest highlight of the frame with a two-run ground rule double. Boselli would follow with a RBI single and Dan Ryan, who led the team with three hits, followed suit with a run scoring single up the middle.

McLoughlin allowed just one run in the seventh as a leadoff walk came around to score after two groundouts and a RBI single.

Boselli and Guerrera joined Dan Ryan as the three Stags with multiple hits in the game with Guerrera leading the way with three RBI.

With the victory, the Stags clinch their fifth-straight MAAC series to open a season, the first time they have accomplished that feat since 2014.

Fairfield, who holds the most wins in the MAAC, will hit the road for a pair of mid-week contests starting with a visit to crosstown rivals Sacred Heart on Tuesday at 3:30pm.
