Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Stags Season Ends in MAAC Quarterfinals

ALBANY, N.Y. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball 2018-19 season might have come to an end on Friday afternoon with a 63-48 loss to top-seeded Quinnipiac, but the lessons learned by every student-athlete during the campaign will last a lifetime. To find the full impact of those life lessons, look no further than the game's highest scorer in senior Casey Foley. The senior tied a career-high with a career-high five 3-pointers, the second-straight game that she reached that number.

"People always say that basketball and any sport is more than just a game and you're learning lessons for life. This year I really experienced that," Foley said. "I think this is the year I learned the most about myself and became a better person through all the hurdles and ups and downs. I was fortunate to not be personally affected but since it's my teammates I feel just as strongly. I felt like I had to be the one to step up and be the rock and I have no regrets of what I did. I'm really proud of the girls for stepping up with me and it's really nice to see. I think personally, I learned a lot about life, about friendships, about responsibilities, and even more about leadership which is something I take a lot of pride in."

Foley's leadership came to it's highest point during her senior season which was shown in the MAAC Championships where she hit 10 3-point field goals, shooting an incredible 63 percent from behind the arc. She hit 115 field goals during her senior season, doubling the amount she had during her first three seasons combined. She finished her Fairfield career in the top-10 in program history with 138 3-pointers and 180 steals, while also dishing out 322 career assists.

Foley helped snap Quinnipiac's strong start as the Bobcats started the game on a 12-0 run which didn't end until a Khadidiatou Diouf jumper at the 5:06 mark. Foley's 3-pointer on the next possession would put the Stags within single digits.

However, the Bobcats would lead by as many as 14 points on several occasions in the first half. But like they have done all season long, the Stags weathered the hurdles of the early stretch and fought back finishing strong.

Fairfield cut the deficit to just six early in the third quarter with a Lou Lopez-Senechal jumper and another 3-pointer by Foley. Fairfield would get within six three more times during the period the last instance coming on a Sam Kramer lay-up at the 5:14 mark.

The Stags would go the next eight minutes without a point as Quinnipiac went on an 11-0 run to take control of the game.

Lopez-Senechal joined Foley in double figures with 11 points as the freshman averaged 15.5 points in her first MAAC Championships.

Fairfield ended the campaign with an 11-20 record and saw the development of Lopez-Senechal who became the ninth Stag to win the MAAC Rookie of the Year award. Diouf would also be named to the All-MAAC Third Team, becoming the 26th All-MAAC selection under Coach Frager.

"I'm so proud of our players," Frager said. "They got progressively better all season long. We had our share of hurdles to overcome, on and off the floor. We just continued to grow as a team throughout the year. It's tough to come back from the start that we had in terms of wins and losses and we found ourselves in a position that was unfamiliar to us. A lot of teams can come apart under those circumstances and our players did not. They got progressively better throughout the season and were a vastly improved team over the final third. They never stopped learning, they never stopped playing hard, and I think the key was that we grew up as a basketball team together."

Those are the lessons that did not end tonight.
