Stags Stay Hot With Doubleheader Sweep of Marist

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Baseball team is starting to develop a familiar character, and it's one that will leave the fans at the edge of their seats. The Stags rallied in both games of a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) doubleheader to eventually take both victories in extending their winning streak to six games, with scores of 9-6 and 4-2 against Marist. Fairfield trailed by five in the opener before recording a nine run sixth inning and fell behind by a pair of runs in the nightcap before Giacomo Brancato tied the game with a two-run shot to straightaway center field.

"You always hope when you come back from a deficit like we have lately that it's good character building," Head Coach Bill Currier said. "We're never respecting being down and it's a good thing that we're feeling that now. Even if we're down we have the chance to come back so it's a good feeling that every team wants and that has what happened lately."

Game One: Fairfield 9, Marist 6

The Stags fell behind by five runs as Marist scored three runs in the third and a single run in the fifth and sixth innings, but found a way to battle back. What was more amazing about their comeback was that all nine runs were scored with two outs.

Fairfield had a runner on first and two outs before Dan Ryan drove in the Stags' first run with a triple to center field. The Stags would load the bases on back-to-bac walks before Griffin Watson forced in a run as he was hit by a pitch. Mike Caruso would follow by bringing in a run with a walk and Tim Zeng would tie the game as he fisted an inside pitch just over the third baseman's head to plate a pair of runs. Jack Gethings would follow with a RBI walk. Anthony Boselli would add a two run single before Dan Ryan drove in his second run of the inning with a single.

In total, the Stags totaled five hits, five walks, and two hit batters in their nine run inning.

That is all the Stags would need as Marist was only able to tally a run in the eighth before Nick Grabek closed the door with his fourth save of the season.

The first five batters of the lineup all tallied a pair of hits, with Gethings scoring a couple and putting him just three runs shy of the program's top spot.

Austin Pope battled through five innings as the starter, and getting out of a bases loaded no one jam in the second. In total, Pope would strike out eight in his five inning outing.

Game Two: Fairfield 4, Marist 2

After a two run homer by Gene Napolitano put Fairfield behind by two runs in the second, the Stags responded in a big way. Brancato would launch the first pitch he saw on the day to the deepest part of the park and over the centerfield wall for his second home run of the season.

The Stags would get the lead in the fourth as Boselli doubled home Justin Guerrera with a line drive down the left field line.

Fairfield would get an insurance run in the fifth after Caruso started the frame with a double to center. With the infield in, Guerrera lined a hot shot off the shortstop's glove into left, to plate Caruso and make the score 4-2.

After allowing the second inning homer, Michael Sansone was dominant allowing four hits the rest of the way. Sansone would get his second career victory after pitching all seven innings striking out three and scattering eight hits.

Although the Stags tallied seven hits, the most notable absentee from the hits list was Gethings who snapped his 25-game hit streak with an 0-for-3 showing in the nightcap, that ended with the left fielder making a diving catch on a short fly ball. The 25 games is the most in program history by a Stag and surpassing the previous record by seven games.

The Stags and the Red Foxes will close out their three-game series with a single game on Sunday at noon.
