Stags Pick Up Big Hits in Home Opening Win

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Anthony Boselli broke a 2-2 tie in the fifth as he capped a two out rally with a two-run single, leading the Fairfield University Baseball team to a 5-2 win over Central Connecticut State in their first home game of the season. Bryson Cafaro picked up the victory as he was the first of four Fairfield relievers to throw a shutout frame on the afternoon.

All five of Fairfield's runs came on just two run scoring hits as Tom Ryan started the scoring with a two run double down the left field line in the second. Ryan drove home Dan Ryan, who singled to start the inning and Dylan Reynolds who followed with a walk.

After Central Connecticut State tied the game with a run in the third and fourth innings, pitching would take over as both teams combined for just four hits after the fourth inning.

Three of those hits came in Fairfield's half of the fifth as the Stags rallied with two outs and nobody on. Justin Guerrera started the rally by beating out a groundball that the shortstop had to range to his left to field, but bobbled on his attempted throw to first. On a hit and run call, Jack Gethings would follow with a two strike single to right, advancing Guerrera to third. Gethings would also steal second to put runners in scoring position, one of three stolen bases for the Stags in the game.

Boselli would follow with the biggest hit of the game as he grounded another two strike pitch up the middle, scoring two runs. Boselli would steal second and score on back-to-back errors to put the Stags ahead 5-2.

Cafaro, Bobby McNiff, Tristan Amone, and Ian Halpin would keep that lead as the quartet of Fairfield relievers surrendered just one hit over the final five innings. Amone threw the first two frames and Halpin came in to earn his first save of the season.

Gethings led the team with a pair of hits, to bring his season average to an even .400. He has recorded a hit in all 20 games this season, becoming the first Stag in program history to attain a hitting streak of 20 games. His overall hitting streak stands at 23, dating back to last season.

The Stags will be back at Alumni Diamond when they host regional power St. John's on Wednesday at 3pm.
