BROOKLYN, N.Y. – Justin Guerrera hit his first collegiate homer and
Mike Caruso lined a RBI double to give the Fairfield University Baseball team a 3-1 lead, but LIU Brooklyn scored two runs in the seventh with the bases loaded to take a 4-3 decision against the Stags. Three of Fairfield's five hits came in the sixth inning which featured Guerrera's long ball.
Jack Gethings tied the game for the Stags in the fifth as he singled home
Tyler Gambardella, who led off the inning with a walk. Gambardella would reach third after a throwing error. Both Gethings and
Tim Zeng, who also walked, would advance to scoring position with no outs in the fifth, but the Blackbirds were able to strike out the next two hitters before ending the inning on a fly out.
Guerrera led off the sixth with his first career homer and was followed by a
Tom Ryan double. Caruso would cap the scoring with his own RBI double.
The Blackbirds loaded the bases in the seventh and was able to score the tying run on a groundout and the go-ahead run on a hit by pitch.
Four Stag relievers threw scoreless innings, with
Bryson Cafaro going two innings and allowing just two hits.
Bobby McNiff surrendered one base knock in his inning of work while
Brendan Harkin and
Nick Grabek only allowed a walk in their frame.
The Stags will hit the road for a four-game series against Brown starting on Friday at 3pm.
