FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will host their 2019-20 home opener when they welcome the Dartmouth Big Green to the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall on Sunday at 2pm. To celebrate the home opener, fans attending the game will receive a poster schedule and magnet in the first home promotion of the women's basketball season.
The Stags are coming off their first win of the year and they did so in dramatic fashion. Fairfield closed out the game on an 11-1 run, highlighted by
Lou Lopez-Senechal's jumper with 0.4 seconds remaining that gave the Stags a 53-51 lead.
Trailing 50-42 with 6:30 left, the Fairfield defense clamped down and did not allow a LIU field goal for the rest of the contest. The Stags forced five turnovers in that span, including a key shot clock violation in the final minute. Offensively,
Sam Kramer and Lopez-Senechal accounted for all 11 points down the stretch. Kramer's short jumper originally gave the Stags the lead before LIU tied the game on the free throw line.
Lopez-Senechal and Kramer both finished with 13 points, but both trailed
Callie Cavanaugh who had her best game as a Stag. The FIU transfer posted a new personal best with 17 points, besting her previous mark of 12 that she did twice at FIU. She also tied the team lead with Kramer with seven boards.
The exciting finish was the first time in a few years that the Stags won a game in the final second. Kristin Schatzlein was the last Stag to win a game in the final second as her floater on January 2, 2015 downed Canisius 52-51 with 1.4 seconds.
Dartmouth enters play with an unblemished 2-0 record after wins against Vermont and Merrimack. Three student-athletes average double figures over the team's first two games in Anna Luce, Annie McKenna, and Paula Lenart. Luce leads the trio with 16.0 points per game. Ellie Louie is the team leading rebounder with 8.5 boards this season. McKenna has served as the team's point guard, dishing out 5.0 assists on the early season.
As a team, Dartmouth tied for sixth in the Ivy League Preseason Poll. The Big Green return three players that started 20 or more games last season in McKenna, Kealy Brown, and Lenart. Dartmouth nearly clinched a spot in the Ivy League Tournament last season, finishing one game back.
The Stags will have nearly two weeks off before their next contest when they open up the month of December at URI. The Stags will face the Rams on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 2pm.
