FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The final weekend of the regular season will offer some excitement for the Fairfield University field hockey team. The Stags will host a pair of games that hold a great deal of meaning for the program. On Friday, Fairfield welcomes LIU to University Field for the final Northeast Conference game of the season for both teams. Two days later, the Stags will host Drexel University for an afternoon game with the program holding its annual senior day prior to the game's start.
Fairfield, ranked
24th in the nation with a 14-2 overall record, remains the lone unbeaten team in NEC play with a 5-0 mark, one game better than LIU and Rider University. Should the Stags earn the victory against the Sharks, Fairfield would win the NEC regular-season championship outright. A loss would create a three-way tie with LIU and Rider, sending the tournament seeding to a tie-breaker for the top seed in next weekend's NEC tournament, hosted by Wagner College.
The Stags completed a weekend sweep in conference play last weekend by handing Wagner and Merrimack losses on the road. Two defenders were instrumental in the team's offense in those two victories highlighted by
Kelly Buckley's two goals in the win over Wagner.
Luzi Persiehl collected three assists including the setup of both game winning goals. For her efforts,
Persiehl earned her third NEC Offensive Player of the Week award.
Zoe Rosen also stood tall in the Fairfield goal, making 10 saves in the two games and posting a 1.00 goals against average.
Scoring goals has not been an issue for the Stags through most of the season, registering three or more goals in seven of their 16 games to date. Danielle
Profita stands at the heart of Fairfield's success, netting a team-best 20 points off seven goals and six assists.
Persiehl is next in line with 17 points, registering five goals and seven assists with all of her goals representing game winners. Freshman
Julianna Kratz is just one point off the mark with 16 points, adding five goals and six assists in her 16 appearances.
LIU enters the weekend with a 7-7 overall record after edging Sacred Heart in overtime by a 3-2 margin and following with a 1-0 decision over Bryant. Sammy Bell has enjoyed a fine season to date, netting nine goals and adding two assists for 20 points. She is tied for the third in the NEC for scoring along with Fairfield's
Profita.
KaitlynÂ
Olton is next in line with 12 points, a result of her six goals. She is also responsible for three of the team's game-winning goals. Goalkeeper
Rachel Vellis has spent every minute in the LIU net, sporting a 1.99 goals against average and a .775 save percentage.
Drexel started the weekend with a 4-12 overall record its match with Northeastern on Friday. Before that game, the Dragons split a pair of games by beating Towson University before falling to #12 Delaware.
Puk
Thewessen paces the team's attack with 13 points, netting four goals and dishing off five assists in her 16 games played. Avery Powell (11 points), Tess
Horan (10 points), and Tess
Bernheimer (10 points) have also reached double figures for scoring this year. Avery has garnered the team lead for goals scored with five while
Bernheimer sets the pace with six assists on the campaign. Megan
Hadfield spent a majority of the minutes in the Drexel goal, securing a 4.77 goals against average with a .613 save percentage (49 saves).Â
