STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Late game heroics have become the norm for the Fairfield University field hockey team. Before today's match with Wagner College, the Stags had won four games in overtime and posted the deciding goal in the fourth quarter four times. You can add one more to the fourth quarter tally as the 24
th-ranked Fairfield scored three goals in the final 15 minutes to defeat its host by a 3-1 count.
Head Coach
Jackie Kane watched her team take control of the game early but the Stags could not finish any of their scoring changes in the first half. Fairfield posted seven shots in the first 30 minutes but only one of those attempts was on target, a shot that goalkeeper Justine van Spengler turned away.
Madison Hoskins was responsible for the shot in the 22
nd minute.
Wagner swing the momentum toward its side of the pitch in the third quarter, taking advantage of four penalty corners which yielded five shots through the first 10 minutes of action. Fairfield goalkeeper
Zoe Rosen was able to keep those attempts within reach, earning four saves in the quarter. Fairfield was not able to muster any offensive challenges during the quarter, getting shutout in the shots category.
The Stags were able to turn things back to their favor in the final quarter, needing just five minutes to put the first goal of the game on the scoreboard.
Danielle Profita posted her team-leading seventh goal when she converted a pass from
Luzi Persiehl, an attempt which beat the goalkeeper to the lower part of the goal.
Fairfield made good on one of its penalty corner during the fourth period as Persiehl once again played a role in creating an opportunity. The sophomore accepted the penalty corner and sent the ball toward goal.
Malen Iglesias was waiting in front and was able to deflect the ball past the goalkeeper to push the lead to 2-0.
A few minutes later,
Ymke Huisman tallied her first goal of the season with some nifty stick work that caught the Wagner defense off guard. The midfielder took the ball off the stick of a defender and sent a shot from the left circle that hit the back of the cage to raise Fairfield's advantage to 3-0 with less than three minutes left in the game.
Wagner avoided the shutout with 1:38 left in the game as Hannah Meyer fired a backhanded shot from the top of the circle which caught the far corner of the goal to make it a 3-1 contest.
Rosen finished the game with eight saves, facing 15 shots from the home team. Wagner placed two goalkeepers in the net this afternoon with Annabel Zandvoort allowing all three goals while van Spengler made one save without allowing a goal in the first half.
Fairfield plays its final regular-season road game of the season on Saturday afternoon when it travels to Durham, N.H. to play Merrimack College.
