Stags Head to Manhattan on Friday

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will aim for their longest winning streak of the year when they head to Riverdale, N.Y., to take on the Manhattan Jaspers on Friday night at 7pm. This will be the only matchup between the two teams this season.

The Stags gained their second-straight victory by defeating Siena 59-55 on Tuesday night. The story was once again the Fairfield defense that limited Siena to just 31 points over the first 30 minutes of the game including 17 in the first half. Offensively, the Stags shot over 40 percent for the second-straight outing and were led by a trio of players in double figures. Khadidiatou Diouf led the team with 15 points while Katie Armstrong netted 13 and Lou Lopez-Senchal added 12.

Fairfield grabbed their largest lead of 14 points with just over three minutes remaining in the quarter until Siena made a late emphatic push that resulted in seven 3-pointers in the quarter. Siena actually connected on five-straight long range shots that saw the Fairfield lead that was at eight with 45 seconds left evaporate to just two 20 seconds later. Luckily for the Stags, Siena would finally miss a shot that would have tied the game and Casey Foley hit her final four free throws to seal the win.

The Stags converted 18 of their 21 free throw attempts, raising their conference leading number to .761, a number that also ranks 20th in the country. The Stags are on pace to break the single season program record for free throw percentage which is currently .727 set back during the 2003-04 season.

Manhattan is coming off a season defining win as they dominated Marist with an 18-point victory on the road on Sunday.

The Jaspers are one of the top defensive teams in the league and that showed that in that win over the Red Foxes. The Jaspers limited Marist to just 15 field goals on 30 percent shooting. For the season, Manhattan is tied for the league lead with 4.1 blocked shots per game and fifth in the MAAC with 9.1 steals per contest.

While the team does not have a player who averages double figures, Manhattan is a deep team with 11 players averaging at least 11.7 minutes per game. All of those players also have recorded at least five steals, five assists and 30 rebounds for the season.

The Stags will return home for their next contest on Super Bowl Sunday when they take on Monmouth at 2pm.
