JERSEY CITY, N.J. --
Drew Westford and
Mikayla Rubin registered three hits and combined for six RBI to pace the Fairfield University softball team's offense as the Stags extended their winning streak to five games with a sweep of Saint Peter's University. The Stags won the opener by a 3-0 count before collecting the win in game two by a 10-1 margin.
In the opening game, the Stags picked up an unearned run in the second inning, a rally set up by Westford's leadoff single. After
Hannah Futo worked out a walk to put two runners on base, both Westford and Futo moved up a base following a passed ball. Rubin sent a ball to shortstop but the grounder was mishandled and resulted in Westford running home with the game's first run.
Fairfield plated two more runs in the fourth inning, taking advantage of two Peacock errors.
Lauryn Rhinehart started the inning with a single and took second when the left fielder did not cleanly field the ball. Futo dropped a bunt that sent Rhinehart to third base.
Makenna DiGuilio earned a walk to put runners on the corners, setting up a double steal that would eventually result in Fairfield's second run. DiGuilio continued on to third base with another stolen base, and came home after
Rachel Sieber's grounder to the left side was booted.
Pitcher
Destinee Pallotto made those runs stand in earning her ninth win of the season and her fourth shutout of the campaign. The senior fanned eight hitters and yielded six hits with one walk during her seven innings in the pitching circle.
The second game showcased some early offense with four runs in the first two innings and some late offense with six runs over the final two innings. The Stags manufactured the game's first run when
Alisha Marshall led the game off with a walk. After advancing on a bunt, Marshall sprinted to third base off a wild pitch.
Courtney Hankins brought her home with a sacrifice fly.
Marshall was in the middle of Fairfield's two-run second inning, bringing home the first run with an RBI single and scoring as part of Rubin's two-run single that brought the score to 4-0. The lead would remain a four-run edge until the fourth inning when Saint Peter's would score its only run of the day on an RBI single by Barbara Verrastro.
The Stags would put the game out of reach with a two-run sixth inning, both coming home when Westford and Rhinehart both secured bases-loaded walks. In the seventh inning, Sieber and Rubin both laced an RBI single while two more runs came off grounders to the infield.
Rhinehart went the distance as the team's pitcher, surrendering five hits while striking out six in her seven innings of work.
