FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield University Women's Lacrosse scored the first seven goals of the afternoon and never looked back on the way to an 18-7 win over host Sacred Heart.
Kathleen Hulseman totaled five points and
Brooke Gallagher sent home four goals as 12 different Stags notched at least one point in the victory.
Â
The Stags' season-high goal output was the most since burying 19 scores in two victories last season. Fairfield is now 3-2 overall and 2-0 at the midway point of its current four-game road swing. Sacred Heart falls to 0-3 after dropping its home opener to the Stags.
Â
In addition to Gallagher's four goals,
Olivia Russell and
Taylor Mitchell each registered hat tricks on the day. Hulseman and Jullian Winwood potted two goals apiece with single scores coming from the crosses of
Lily Crager,
Jayne Tully (her first career goal),
Meaghan Graham and
Kelly Horning.
Â
Hulseman handed out three assists for the second time this spring, Crager distributed a pair, and Winwood,
Brenna Connolly,
Diana DeVita and
Mary Smyth each dished out one helper.
Â
In the midfield, Fairfield held a 14-12 lead in draw controls fueled by nine from
Erin Mammele, who entered the day as one of the nation's best on the draw. With today's effort, the junior moves into fourth place on Fairfield's all-time list with 135 draw controls in her career. Her former teammate
Riley Hellstein '17 is the program leader with 170 career draw controls.
The Stags were edged in ground balls, 11-9, led by two pick-ups apiece from Horning and
Kennedy Slater.
Â
Paulina DiFatta helmed the cage for the first 57:40 of the contest. The current NCAA co-leader in saves added nine more to her total this afternoon en route to the win.
Emily Polsinello made her collegiate debut over the final 2:50 of action and turned away one shot.
Â
The defense in front of the cage was guided by Slater with a pair of caused turnovers alongside Mammele,
Katie FitzPatrick and
Maggie Reynolds on the starting back line.
Â
Sacred Heart was led by a hat trick from Hanna Wise and a four-point day by Averi Farhat. Paige Hammick made 10 saves in goal for the Pioneers.
Â
The Stags are back in action on Saturday, March 3 at noon at New Hampshire and will also visit Lehigh on their current road trip before returning to Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium to host Boston University on Wednesday, March 14 at 3 p.m.
