FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The chase is on.
For the men's basketball team, the Stags are chasing a better seeding in the upcoming Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament while senior
Tyler Nelson continues to chase the program's career scoring record. Both will conduct their chase this Saturday at Webster Bank Arena as the Stags host Quinnipiac University. The game is scheduled for a 1 pm tip.
Quinnipiac and Manhattan are tied for the fifth spot in the latest MAAC standings with both teams holding a 7-8 conference mark. Fairfield is right behind the two teams with a 6-9 mark so this weekend's match up with the Bobcats could have a profound effect on the tournament seedings come March. Meanwhile, Nelson will take the court needing just seven points to become the Stags' career scoring leader after the senior became the second Fairfield student-athlete to reach 2,000 points following his 29-point effort in an 83-79 win over Marist last Thursday. Nelson joined Tony George '86 for that distinction as George set the school standard with 2,006 career points during his senior season.
The Bobcats won in dramatic fashion last Thursday, edging Manhattan College in the closing seconds to secure a 71-70 win. The victory marked the fourth time that the team won a game by one point this season. Isaiah Washington posted the deciding points with a layup that fell through the basket with 6.7 seconds remaining in regulation. Cameron Young, who made the pass to Washington for the game-winner, finished the contest with 27 points and five assists.
Young is the team's top scorer with 18.4 points per game while Chaise Daniels is also averaging in double figures with his 11.7 scoring average. The Bobcats also have a couple of freshmen who are making an immediate impact on the program, namely Rich Kelly and Jacob Rigoni. Kelly places third on the team with his 9.8 scoring average while Rigoni is next in line by netting 9.3 points every forty minutes. Kelly is a two-time MAAC Rookie of the Week, last winning the honor on December 26.
The Stags picked up their 11th win of the campaign following their 83-79 win over Marist on Thursday night. Fairfield led for more than 30 minutes in the game and held a 12-point lead during the second half. The Red Foxes managed to cut the lead down to two points in the closing seconds but a pair of free throws from
Ferron Flavors Jr. with five seconds remaining turned the game into a two-possession affair and ended Marist's come back hopes.
Tyler Nelson paced the offense with a game-high 29 points, making 10 of 18 shots from the floor and all six free throws. Two of his double-digit field goal performance came against Marist this season including a season-best 11 on January 13.
Ferron Flavors Jr. was also a major part of the team's win on Thursday, registering 16 points and 10 rebounds in his 33 minutes of work.
Jesus Cruz was next in line with 10 points, and added four assists without a turnover in his 27 minutes of work. Nelson raised his scoring average to 21.5 points per game paces both the team and the conference. Flavors Jr. also improved on his season scoring average, pushing his number to 11.8 points every forty minutes.
