LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Casey Foley,
Khadidiatou Diouf, and
Lou Lopez-Senechal all scored in double figures as the Fairfield University Women's Basketball team concluded their play in Las Vegas with a 68-60 win over UIC in the South Point Holiday Hoops Classic.
For the second-straight game, the Stags would control the majority of the first half as they led for nearly 18 minutes in the half. Foley continued her hot-shooting in Vegas as she connected on her first three 3-point attempts, making six-straight long range shots for her including yesterday's game against Furman.
The Stags led by as many as 14 in the first quarter as they out-scored the Flames 21-7 in the opening quarter as the team shot 60 percent from the floor.
UIC would increase their full court press in the second quarter which led to eight Fairfield turnovers. This defense helped the Flames to score 25 points in the period and would actually take their first lead of the game on a Brittany Byrd buzzer-beating 3-pointer to end the half.
After
Katie Armstrong regained the lead with a jumper 16 seconds into the third quarter both teams would battle back and forth.
Fairfield took the lead for good on a Lopez-Senechal jumper with 2:10 left in the third and her two free throws helped the Stags to a 50-47 lead going into the final period.
The freshman was at the heart of the next Fairfield run after she drew a charge to give possession back to the Stags. Lopez-Senechal would tally the next four Fairfield points on a pair of free throws and a jumper which gave the Stags a 60-52 advantage at the 5:20 mark of the fourth.
The Stags would hit only one field goal the rest of the way on a Diouf lay-up, but the squad was able to control the game clock and hit their free throws for the victory.
Lopez-Senechal became the first Stag rookie of the season to eclipse 20 points as she finished with a career-high 21. Foley was right behind her with a new personal-best 18 and Diouf finished with 16.
Rachel Hakes controlled the offense with six assists and also chipped in career-highs in points (7) and steals (3).
The Stags will now turn their attention to the MAAC slate as they start off the conference campaign at Quinnipiac on Jan. 3 at 7pm.
