Stags Start Off Campaign With Win Over A-10 Richmond

Box Score RICHMOND, Va. – The first game of the season allows a team to showcase what they have worked at all offseason long. The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team displayed all their hard work in the gym on both ends of the floor, resulting in a wire-to-wire 58-40 season opening win at Atlantic-10 foe Richmond.

The victory marks the first win for the Stags over Richmond since November 4, 2007, the first game with Head Coach Joe Frager on the sideline.

"To start a season with a win is always great especially on the road," Coach Joe Frager, who collected his 203rd Fairfield win said. "I thought the team played a really good first and third quarter. I'm really pleased with the defense and we got contributions from everyone.

On the offensive side, the Stags (1-0) showed energy from the opening whistle with three Stags tallying career-highs. Sophomore Sam Lewis was at the forefront of the offensive charge as she recorded a personal-best eight points inside the first four minutes of the season.

Katie Armstrong was also an important part in Fairfield collecting a 30-25 lead at halftime. The redshirt junior tallied her first eight points in a Fairfield uniform in the first half and kept possessions alive with two offensive rebounds.

The Stags led the entire first half, with Armstrong giving Fairfield their biggest lead of 11 points with a jumper at the 4:49 mark of the second quarter.

The Spiders started chipping away led by their Preseason All-Atlantic-10 guard Alex Parson who recorded the final eight points of the half for Richmond. Her 3-pointer brought the home team within five points at 30-25, accounting for the halftime score.

The Stags got the momentum back out of the locker room, scoring the first 14 points of the second half eventually out-scoring the Spiders 25-8 in the third quarter. Casey Foley started the run with a defended 3-pointer and Khadidiatou Diouf capped off the stretch with a layup, as she accounted for eight of the 14 points during the run. Lewis added three points to the 14-0 run with a traditional 3-point play.

Emma Squires would end the streak with a bucket at the 4:25 mark of the third quarter, marking Richmond's first points of the quarter. Foley would answer right back with her third 3-pointer of the contest.

Diouf was instrumental in the game deciding quarter as she poured in 12 points during the period helping the Stags shoot 65 percent (11-for-17) in the frame. On the reverse side, the Stags limited the Spiders to just two field goals in the third quarter with an 18 percent shooting percentage.

Point guard Sam Kramer distributed the ball throughout the third quarter, registering five of her career-high tying seven assists during the period.

The Stags would continue their defensive intensity in the fourth quarter as Richmond connected on just one of their first seven attempts, sealing the victory.

Diouf would lead the Stags in both points (17) and rebounds (nine) with Lewis' 11 points right behind her. Foley chipped in nine points on 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc. Foley was also one of three Stags to pick up two steals in the game as Fairfield forced 17 turnovers. In her first game as a Stag, Armstrong collected 10 points.

The Stags will return home when they host LIU Brooklyn on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at the Webster Bank Arena at 5pm.
