Strong Second Half Lifts Stags Over LIU-Brooklyn

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team out-scored visiting LIU-Brooklyn 45-22 in the second half to turn a five-point halftime lead into a comfortable 71-43 victory. In her first home game as a Stag, Katie Armstrong led all scorers with 20 points, and was one of three Stags in double figures.

"I thought we played a really good second half," Head Coach Joe Frager said. "We made a few adjustments at halftime. I have to give a lot of credit to LIU-Brooklyn, they played a great first half but I thought we were sluggish. We needed to be sharper coming out in the second half and we did that."

For the second-straight game the Stags (2-0) did not trail in the game starting with a Khadidiatou Diouf jumper 12 seconds into the contest. Also for the second time this year, Sam Lewis had a strong first quarter hitting two 3-pointers to account for six points in the first three minutes.

The Blackbirds (0-3) chipped away until they tied the game at 21-21 following a Shyla Stanford 3-pointer. The Stags would answer back by ending the half on a 5-0 run, started by Armstrong's first career 3-pointer.

The Stags would start the third quarter on a 14-1 run and would hold LIU Brooklyn without a field goal until the 3:03 mark of the quarter. The Blackbirds went 0-for-5 during that stretch and turned the ball over four times.

Three different Stags scored during the game-deciding run, which was capped by a 3-point play by Armstrong.

In the first two games this year, the Stags have out-scored their opponent 47-20 in the third quarter and have not allowed a field goal in the first five minutes in either contest.

The Stags would run their lead to 30 at the 1:04 mark with a Lewis 3-point field goal.

Along with Armstrong's game-high 20, Lewis chipped in 14 and Diouf added 10. Eden Nibbelink led the team with seven rebounds and went 2-for-6 from behind the arc. The Stags also hit all 13 of their free throw attempts with Armstrong leading the way with a 5-for-5 showing.

Kendra Landy tied for the team lead with five assists on just one turnover.

The Stags will hit the road when they travel to Xavier on Saturday at 2pm.
