FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- After winning its fifth game at Webster Bank Arena last weekend, the Fairfield University men's basketball team will now focus on Rider University which comes to Bridgeport on Tuesday night. The two teams will tip off at 7 pm.Â
For the second straight date, the Stags will face one of the top offensive teams in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Last Saturday, Fairfield played Niagara University which ranks first in the MAAC for scoring offense. On Tuesday, the Stags will face the second-best team in scoring offense when Rider comes to town. But when the final buzzer sounded in the Niagara game, it was the Stags that put on the offensive showcase, scoring a season-best 104 points in the 19-point win over the Purple Eagles.
Tuesday's game will complete the season series between these two teams with Rider winning the first match up by a 96-77 count at Alumni Gymnasium as five Broncs reached double figures.
Tyler Nelson led all Fairfield scorers with 21 points, while
Jonathan Kasibabu just missed a double-double with 13 points and eight rebounds. Frederick Scott came off the bench to pace Rider with 25 points, while Stevie Jordan added 18 markers.
The Broncs won a pair of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) games last week, giving the team six wins in their last seven outings. The run has improved Rider's overall record to 13-7 and its MAAC mark to 6-2, which places the program in a tie for second place in the standings. Rider recorded a 60-57 win against Marist College in its last game, collecting a double-double from Anthony Durham (10 points, 11 rebounds), and near double-doubles from Jordan Allen (13 points, nine rebounds), and Frederick Scott (14 points, nine rebounds). Â The 60 points was the lowest winning point total by Rider this season as the team averaged 85 points per victory before the Marist game.
The high scoring totals should be no surprise since the Broncs place second in the MAAC for scoring offense at 81.3 points per game and also are number one in scoring margin at +3.8 points. Defensively, Rider sits atop of the other MAAC schools in rebounding margin (+3.5) and steals (7.1 per game). Frederick Scott is one of five Rider student-athletes with a double-figure scoring average this season, joining Dimencio Vaughn as the team's leading scorers with 14.0 scoring average. Jordan Allen and Stevie Jordan are next with 13.4 and 13.3 scoring averages.
Fans witnessed one of the best offensive showings in some time when the Stags halted Niagara's five-game winning streak with a 104-85 win at Webster Bank Arena. While
Tyler Nelson grabbed the top spot for scoring with 28 points, freshman
Aidas Kavaliauskas posted his second straight double-double with 14 points and 11 assists. The native of Lithuania has garnered a lot of attention in his two starts, averaging 14 points and 10.5 assists while only committing three turnovers in 76 minutes of work. Both Nelson and Kavaliauskas were part of five Fairfield student-athletes to score in double figures, which included starters
Ferron Flavors Jr. (18 points) and
Jesus Cruz career-high 19 points).
Matija Milin rounded out the quintet by coming off the bench for 15 points, his best total as a reserve since his freshman campaign.
Nelson improved his season scoring average to 21.1 points per game with
Ferron Flavors Jr. holding down second with 11.6 points per contest.
Jonathan Kasibabu secured a team-high eight rebounds against Niagara, on January 20 the sixth time in a nine game run that he reached at least seven caroms in a game. He leads the team in rebounding with 5.1 caroms per contest.
