FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University men's soccer team opened its appearance in the 2017 Mayor's Cup with a 2-1 double overtime loss to host Hartwick College on Friday night.
Don-Junior Bobe scored his third goal of the season in this game, which tied the score in the first half.
The Hawks took the lead in the 36
th minute when Fairfield was called for a foul inside the box, providing a penalty kick opportunity for Hartwick. Jamie O'Grady was selected for the shot and sent a shot to the lower left corner of the goal. Goalkeeper
Jack Robinson chose correctly and went low toward the corner, putting a hand on the ball but not enough to stop the attempt from finding the corner.
Fairfield did not trail very long as the Stags were able to apply pressure up front which eventually resulted in the tying goal. Freshman
Ryan Ruff started the scoring possibility when he sent a pass to Bobe who took the pass just outside the box. He entered the box with the ball and sent a shot to the lower corner with just under two minutes remaining.
Both teams had chances in the second half but the goalkeepers were equal to the task and the game even. Fairfield nearly won the game in the first overtime when a shot seemed destined for the upper corner but Hartwick goalkeeper Lenny Wilson punched the ball from danger.
The Hawks won the game when Johnny McBeth and Hamish Ritchie set up O'Grady for his second goal. O'Grady secured the ball about 10 feet from the goal and sent a shot inside the left post that ended the game at 105:51.
Robinson made four saves in the game, including one in overtime. Wilson made one save which also came in extra time.
Fairfield will finish up its run at the Mayor's Cup when it takes on Robert Morris on Sunday at noon.
