Field Hockey Drops 3-1 Decision At William & Mary

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The Fairfield University field hockey team battled through its second road game in three days and put together a solid performance, but in the end, fell to the College of William & Mary to complete its weekend in Virginia. The Stags were in the midst of a tied game for nearly 50 minutes before the home team broke through for a couple of goals off penalty corners to decide the contest.

Head Coach Jackie Kane watched her team rebound from its loss to 10th-ranked Virginia and stay close to its opponent throughout the game. William & Mary opened the game with a quick strike that put the team in front 1-0, scoring a goal just 58 seconds into the game. Cammie Lloyd finished the scoring chance that was created when Woodward Hooper entered the circle and delivered a pass to Lloyd's stick. The forward drove the passed ball to the far post, creating the 1-0 advantage. The score would remain at 1-0 when the first half ended as goalkeeper Zoe Rosen, who received her first collegiate start today, made four saves to keep the game within reach.

Fairfield was the first team to score in the second half when Meghann Maguire completed a scoring play to tie the game at 1-1 with just over 26 minutes remaining in regulation. With the ball loose in front of the goal, Jamie Appelberg secured possession and found Maguire in open space. The freshman drilled a shot to the far post that beat the goalkeeper.

William & Mary put more pressure on the Stags defense but Rosen and her backs did not relent for the next four minutes. The Tribe finally broke through in the game's 48th minute when Booter Ellis sent a pass across the circle toward the far post. Hooper was waiting for the ball and one-timed a deflection that caught the corner of the cage to give William & Mary the lead at 2-1. The Tribe tacked on one more goal with three minutes remaining in the game as Ellis set up Annie Snead with another pass across the circle that found the midfielder at center circle.

Rosen ended the game with 11 saves which raised her weekend total to 24 saves in her 102 minutes of play.

Fairfield will open the home portion of its schedule on Friday, September 1 when the team hosts Hofstra University at University Field. The game is slated for a 1 pm start.
