Stags Fall in Overtime to Host Hawaii

Waipahu, O'ahu – Hawaii's leading returning scorer Raisa Strom-Okimoto lined a shot from 25 yards out that hit the back of the net in the 99th minute, ending another great effort by the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team as the Stags fell 2-1 in overtime. Julia Kleczkowski tallied her first career goal for the Stags in the second half, but Hawaii scored the next two to take the Ohana Hotels by Outriggers Shootout Championship. For her efforts, Kleczkowski was named to the All-Tournament team, joined by Julia McGuire and Alex Madden, who both scored in Friday's win.

Fairfield (1-1) took the lead just 10 minutes into the second half when Shannon Ryan tapped a ball past the backline of Hawaii (2-0), which found the feet of Kleczkowski, setting up a 1v1 opportunity for the sophomore. Kleczkowski converted the opportunity to the right of the keeper for her first collegiate goal, and the first of the match.

Hawaii settled into the match after that score and had the majority of chances until the end. Sonesta Furtado headed in a pass from Johnson-Griggs a few minutes later which knotted the score at 1-1.

The Rainbow Wahine, who entered the match with an 8-1-2 record at home during the last two seasons, kept possession for most of the remaining second half and the overtime period, but was unable to get on the board. Megan DeFeo stopped five shots in goal for the Stags, and was also a key factor on the defense by diving to stop several attacks by the strikers.

Hawaii was able to convert their last chance when Strom-Okimoto found the ball to the left corner of the box and lined the game winner into the top corner.

The Stags were out-shot 15-11 by Hawaii, but had six of those attempts on target. McGuire, who netted the game-winner on Friday, fired three shots, all of them requiring a save from goalkeeper Alexis Mata. Madden and Maggie Walsh also recorded a shot on target, both coming in the first half.

Fairfield will return home and take the pitch at Lessing Field for the first time as a 2017 squad when they host St. John's on Sunday at 7pm.
