Men's Rowing Captures Gold At Spring Mets

NEW ROCHELLE, N.Y. -- The Fairfield University men's rowing team enjoyed gold medal performances from the varsity 8 and novice 4 at the annual Spring Metropolitan Rowing Championship.

The novice 4 controlled the race from the onset and ended up beating runner-up RRI by eight seconds. The Stags crossed the finish line with a time of 8:09.3 while RPI grabbed second play with a mark of 8:17.0. Iona B (8:29.3) and Stevens (8:40.8) finished out the four entries. The winning boat included Matt Daza, Brendan McMahon, Chris Lamberti, Dario Salati and coxswain Justin Elderton,

The varsity 8 also secured a second-place finish to earn a gold medal after winning its heat to garner a position in the final. The Stags were the first boat to finish in its heat, earning a time of 6:34.0. Fairfield was edged out in the final by the University of Connecticut as its time of 6:58.7 was short of the Huskies winning time of 6:53.9. The Stags were represented by Greg Coppola, James Mulhall, Will Quentin, Casey Fuller, Herbie Marache, Lars Erickson, John O'Neill, Matt Sutter, and coxswain Matt Marshall.

The novice 8 also was able collect a medal during the afternoon of competition, picking up a bronze behind the efforts of Seamus O'Brien, Matt Sutter, Charlie Riordan, Lars Erickson, Liam Creegan, Nick Ryan, Matt Daza, Richard Saganey, and coxswain by Justin Elderton.

The lightweight 4 also competed at the Spring Mets and ended the event second to SUNY-Geneseo. The Stags shell was comprised by Mark Soldatic, Seamus O'Brien, Liam Creegan, Richard Saganey and coxswain Danielle Colasacco.

The varsity 4 was also on the water and ended the race fourth with a time of 8:05.5, trailing USMMA (7:58.4), RPI (8:01.1), and Albany (8:02.6). Fairfield's entry was comprised by Charles Cooper, Nick Greco, Jordan Greco, Mike Clarkson, and coxswain Tim Valente.

Fairfield's day was completed by Greg Coppola and James Mulhall, who competed in the pair race. Maritime won the race with a time of 9:06.3 followed by the Stags in 10:17.4.
