Stags Storm Past Pioneers

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University women's lacrosse team stormed past cross-town rival Sacred Heart, 13-4, on Wednesday afternoon on Conway Field at Rafferty Stadium.

The home side led 9-0 at the half behind seven points from senior Riley Hellstein in the first 30 minutes. The attacker finished the game tying her career-high with nine points which included a career-high five assists to go along with four goals. Eight other Stags got on the board including two scores from Lily Crager and one tally each from Scarlett Sulliman, Brenna Connolly, Alex Fehmel, Erin Mammele, Taylor Mitchell, Erin Cunningham, and Olivia Russell.

Fehmel started the scoring four minutes into the contest after securing the pass from Hellstein and firing it home. Hellstein would then score two of the next three for Fairfield to put the home side up 4-0. Mammele, Connolly, Sulliman, and Russell all got on the board in the first half to give the Stags a nine goal lead heading into halftime.

Mitchell put the Stags up by 10 in the second half with her score at the 25:22 mark and then Hellstein made it 11-0 four minutes later.

The Pioneers ended the shutout hopes for Fairfield when Caitlin Delaney scored the first of her two tallies via a free position goal with just under 18 minutes to play.

With the score at 12-1, Amy White entered the contest for Stags to finish the game between the pipes. In the remaining time, Cunningham tallied her first goal of the season to put the home side up 13-2.

Kerri Metzler for the Pioneers notched the final two tallies to bring the final score to 13-4 in favor of the Stags.

Caleigh O'Connor earned her third win of the season while recording six saves. Mammele hauled in a game-high seven draw controls, just one shy of her own program record.

The Stags head to Loudonville, New York this Saturday to open up MAAC play against the Siena Saints.
