EDISON, N.J. – Kelsey Carey and Casey Smith have both been named to All-MAAC teams the conference office announced today with Carey making her first career appearance on the All-MAAC First Team and Smith making her third-straight selection on the conference Third Team. For the Stags, it was the third time in the last five years they have placed a student-athlete on the conference's First Team and the 34th-straight season they have had at least one All-MAAC player.
Carey was ranked as one of the top-five players in the conference after placing fifth in the conference in scoring at 15.4 points per game and earning at least a share of the team-high in points in 18 of the 29 games this season. Her 447 points are the most by a Stag since the 2013-14 campaign when Katie Cizynski tallied 558. Carey also ranks 10th in the MAAC in rebounding (6.4), eighth in field goal percentage (.461), and eighth in minutes played (32.5). Known for her ability to put the ball in the basket, Carey has reached double figures in scoring in all but four games this season while recording seven 20-point efforts.
For the third-straight season, Smith picks up a spot on the All-MAAC Third Team after achieving career-highs with 12.3 points per game and 6.0 rebounds per outing. When the Stags needed a big bucket all year, it seemed to come from Smith who scored the game-winning basket against Loyola earlier in the season and helped the Stags rally past Niagara in late January by scoring 14 second half points. For the year, Smith was 14th in the conference in scoring, 16th in rebounding, 10th in free throw percentage (.765), and 9th in blocks (0.7).
Carey was joined on the First Team by Iona's Alexis Lewis and MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Marina Lizarazu. Rider's Robin Perkins was the only unanimous selection to the squad and was also joined by Siena's Jackie Benitez.
Carey is now one of five players that can be named the MAAC Player of the Year, joined by the other four members of the First Team
Joining Smith on the conference Third Team was: Manhattan's Kayla Grimme, Quinnipiac's Jen Fay and Aryn McClure, and Rider's Julia Duggan.
With the help of Carey and Smith, the Stags have earned the number three seed in the upcoming MAAC Tournament at the Times Union Center in Albany, N.Y. Fairfield will play the winner of sixth-seeded Marist and 11th seed Saint Peter's in the quarterfinals on Saturday at noon.
