FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- With a conference championship and an NCAA tournament appearance tucked away, it seems only fitting that three of the student-athletes that helped the Fairfield University men's soccer team enjoy one of the program's most successful seasons be honored for their role in the Stags' run to the postseason.
Angus Hastings anchored Fairfield's defensive efforts, was rewarded for his efforts with a berth to the United Soccer Coaches All-Region first team, while leading scorer Ben
Wignall was selected to the organization's All-Region second team. And, Don-Junior
Bobe was placed on the United Soccer Coaches All-Region third team after finishing the year as one of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's top freshmen scorers.
Hastings ' regional honors compliment his
All-MAAC first team honors, the fourth time that the defender was honored by the conference during his four-year career. He also collected
All-MAAC second team accolades as sophomore and junior after he received
MAAC All-Rookie laurels as a freshman. This season, Hastings has enjoyed his best offensive season with four goals and one assist for nine points. The senior posted two game-winning goals during the campaign, including the deciding goal in the season-opening win over Oregon State.
"Angus has gone from strength to strength throughout his career at Fairfield University," Head Coach
Carl Rees said. "He has led the team throughout with vocal direction and working incredibly hard on both sides of the ball. Stellar defensive play and a knack for scoring late goals has defined his time with our program."
One of the program's most prolific scorers,
Wignall ended the campaign with a team-high 15 points, tallying six goals and three assists in his 17 starts this season. He ended his career ranked fifth on Fairfield's career goals list with 18 and eighth in career points with 43. The forward also has one game-winning goal to his credit this season, a goal in the
89th minute versus Saint Peter's. He tied for eighth in the
MAAC for total points and also tied for ninth in points per game (0.79). Plus, the forward was tied for
10th in goals per game (0.32).
"Ben is a natural goal scorer. He is equally effective as a center forward or as an attacking midfield player," Rees said. "His commitment and intensity has been a trademark of his performances. Combined with his technique with the ball and intelligent movement away from the ball, he has been a constant goal scoring threat to our opponents."
Bobe also netted six goals on the season with three of those representing game winners in his 20 appearances during year. His three game-winning goals tie him for fourth in the conference as well, registering those goals against Lafayette, Temple, and Quinnipiac. The conference coaches also rewarded the forward for his play during the season by placing him on the
All-MAAC second team as well as on the conference's All-Rookie team. He was selected the
MAAC Rookie of the Week during the campaign as well.
"Don Junior has hit the ground running since his arrival this Fall," Rees said. "He scored goals immediately and led the line in attack in the center forward position. He has tremendous focus and willingness to improve his game. He will only get better performing as the focal point of our attack"
The Fairfield University men's soccer team, under Head Coach
Carl Rees, captured the 2017
MAAC Regular-Season and Tournament Championships this year after posting a 12-5-3 overall record and a 7-1-2
MAAC slate. Rees, who was voted the
MAAC Coach of the Year, helped the Stags advance to the 2017 NCAA tournament.
