FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will travel to the University of Rhode Island for a Monday night matchup against the Rams. Action at the Ryan Center will tip-off at 7pm.
Â
The Stags are coming off their first loss of the season at the George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall against #20/22 Villanova, 73-44. The Stags hung around during the first quarter, trailing the Wildcats by just one after the first 10 minutes. Fairfield led for the first seven minutes, as they held the nationally-ranked Wildcats to just five points during that opening stretch. Villanova was able to weather the Fairfield run as Adrianna Hahn tallied 14 of the team's 16 points in the first quarter by hitting all four of her 3-point attempts. That gave Villanova time to regroup, as they would end up winning their eighth-straight.
Â
Against the nation's third-ranked defense, the Stags were able to protect their possessions, recording a season-low five turnovers in the game. In fact, it is the second-straight game the Stags have notched a season-low in turnovers after picking up just six in the win at Boston College. Fairfield leads the MAAC and ranks 20th in the country in fewest turnovers per game (12.8).
Â
The Stags might see some history in the road game at Rhode Island as
Samantha Cooper enters the game with 983 career points. She will be the 31st player in the program's history to reach the 1,000 point milestone.
Â
Rhode Island will enter the game with a 1-8 record and an eight-game losing streak. The lone win for the Rams came in the season opener against UMass Lowell. The last two defeats have come against Marist and Michigan State. Nicole Jorgensen has worked her way into the starting lineup and is now the team's leading scorer with 10.6 points per game while making exactly 50 percent of her shots. Abby Streeter is next in the scoring column and is the team's biggest threat from long-range, hitting a team-high 2.0 3-pointers per game.
