FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield University Women's Basketball team will complete their first road trip of the season when they make the first of two trips to the city of Boston when they take on the Northeastern Huskies on Friday at 7pm. The Huskies, the second-straight opponent from the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) the Stags will face, will be facing the Stags for the first time since 2003.
The Stags fell to their first CAA opponent of the season, a 57-47 setback to William & Mary. Fairfield took a three-point lead going into the half after hitting four-straight 3-point attempts in the second quarter.
Sam Kramer started the stretch with a triple followed by the first career long-range shot by
Sam Lewis. Kramer would connect on her second 3-pointer of the game and
Kristen McLaughlin's triple ended the stretch.
However, that would be the highlight offensively for the Stags, who tallied 17 second half points, including four in the third quarter. It was during that period that turned the tide as the Tribe ended the third quarter on a 16-4 run.
Just like she did in the season opener,
Samantha Cooper led the Stags with her second-straight double-double and the 19th of her career. Cooper led all players with 16 points and tied a game-high with 13 rebounds. Lewis also took a big step forward by scoring the first six points of her career to go along with two blocks, two steals, and three rebounds.
Through the first two games of the season, Cooper has racked up the statistics, ranking first in the MAAC and eighth in the country with 14.5 rebounds per game. It was the 55th time in her career that she has led the Stags in rebounds, the only active Stag to have at least one.
Although she did not score out of the shooting guard position,
Casey Foley contributed to the play making abilities at William & Mary by leading the Stags with seven assists. Foley was the Stag leader in this category last season when she dished out 98.
The Stags will take on a Northeastern team that is coming off a setback against Providence where they scored 95 points and had led by 20 in the fourth quarter. The Huskies are returning 77 percent of their offensive production from last season, and have gotten off to a fast start scoring the basketball, averaging 84 points per game through their first two contests.
Freshman Stella Clark is the team's leading scorer with 22.0 points per game and a .560 3-point shooting percentage. She is coming off a 28-point output off the bench against Providence, six more points than her debut which earned her the first CAA Rookie of the Week honor.
Last year's leading scorer Claudia Ortiz is right behind her with 18.0 points per game. She is also shooting 62 percent from deep (13-for-21). Ortiz ranked fourth in the CAA with a .393 3-point shooting percentage.
The Stags will return home and play in their first game of the season on George Bisacca Court at Alumni Hall when they welcome Mount St. Mary's on Tuesday at 7pm.
