LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Fairfield University Field Hockey took down Rider by a count of 1-0 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play on Sunday afternoon at Ben Cohen Field.
The Stags were awarded a penalty stroke just ten minutes into the game and chose
Erin Buckley to take the shot. She took her position behind the ball and sent it past the diving goalkeeper into the right side of the cage to give Fairfield the 1-0 advantage. This goal would stand as the only score of the contest and gave the Stags their third win in four games. Fairfield now shares the top spot in the MAAC standings with Monmouth as each team is 3-1 in conference play while Rider drops to 2-2.
For the remainder of the game, the two teams were locked in a defensive battle and were evenly matched with both teams taking 8 total shots and 5 shots on goal. Rider was awarded six penalty corners to Fairfield's five.
Erin Buckley's goal was her second of the season and goalkeeper
Caitlin Gilligan tallied five saves in the shutout.
Fairfield returns to action next Sunday at University Field when they take on Temple University at noon. They will then host Siena on October 27 at 3:30 p.m. for their penultimate MAAC contest of the season.
