FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Manhattan's Arianna Montefusco scored both of the Jaspers' goals and despite 12 shots, the Fairfield University Women's Soccer team could not find the back of the net as they fell 2-0 at Lessing Field. With the setback, the Stags fall to 6-8 overall and 4-4 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC).
The Stags tallied the first two shots of the match in the first 10 minutes, both coming off the feet of midfielder
Maggie Walsh. The Jaspers (8-6-1; 6-2 MAAC) were able to grow into the game, mostly because of the play of Montefusco who recorded the first four shots for the Jaspers.
The final of those four shots got Manhattan on the board as Montefusco corralled a failed clearance by the defense and launched a shot from the top of the box to give the Jaspers a 1-0 lead.
She would finish her day with a score in the 70th minute.
The Stags had chances, out-shooting the Jaspers 12-10.
Melanie Hingher almost answered the first goal from Manhattan as her header off a set piece just sailed wide of the net.
On top of those 12 shots, the Stags had chances in the final third with a couple of crosses intended for
Liz Dumas, but both were turned away with one intervention coming from the Manhattan goalkeeper Kelly DiGregorio.
Hingher tied for the team lead with two shots, while
Alex Madden,
Jenny Jacobs, and Walsh all registered shots on goal.
In her first match back from injury,
Megan DeFeo recorded three saves.
The Stags are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to reigning MAAC Champions Monmouth at 7pm.
