FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Fairfield slugger Jake Salpietro has added another distinction in his historic senior season, as the right fielder became the first Stag in program history to be named to the Northeast-ABCA/Rawlings Northeast First Team. Salpietro is coming off the best season of his four-year career as he set a new program record for hits (77) in a single season and was named the MAAC Tournament MVP in bringing the Stags their first tournament title and first NCAA Regional appearance.
“It's a great tribute to Jake,” Head Coach Bill Currier said. “He put together an outstanding year and we had outstanding success. It's a great way to cap off a senior year and good career at Fairfield.”
Salpietro set the new Fairfield single season hits record during his final at-bat in his career, a double in the ninth inning against Dallas Baptist in the NCAA Regional. For the senior, it signified the biggest accomplishment of his four-year stay, helping Fairfield to their first conference title since 1993, and first-ever NCAA Regional appearance. Salpietro was named the MAAC Tournament MVP after going 9-for-13 during the three games, which also helped him to a Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week honor.
For the season, the All-MAAC First Team selection led the team in home runs (10), hits (77), runs (47), RBI (42), average (.344), slugging (.571), doubles (17), and on-base-percentage (.432).
To go along with the All-Regional First Team selection, Salpietro was also named NEIBA Second Team and All-Star game.
Salpietro is the fourth Stag to receive Regional honors and the first since Ryan Plourde earned Second Team laurels in 2014. Peter Allen was named to the All-Region squad in 2007 while Dan Krines was the first Fairfield player to earn the distinction in 2000.
